How a Pressure Switch Works
This part plays an important part as your furnace prepares to heat your house.
Here’s what happens after your thermostat’s call for heat:
- Your furnace’s control board commences running the draft inducer blower motor. This exhausts combustion gases from the heat exchanger and moves in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
- When the pressure switch senses that enough air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and commands the control board to ignite the furnace.
- Your furnace ignites and creates heat.
What Happens When a Pressure Switch Breaks Down
When your pressure switch isn’t working promptly, you’ll likely hear the fan going and the switch clicking a few times before the furnace turns off completely. When a part isn’t working right, your furnace will turn off to protect you.
Your furnace will show you something is incorrect with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to exhibit error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.
You may notice short flashes or an alternating slow flash as it communicates a fault code.
